Toll Group launches Sydney control tower

Transport and logistics company, Toll Group, launched its new control tower at its site in Prestons, Sydney, on 2 May 2022.

The control tower will contribute toward further enhancing Toll’s safety record through the creation of more robust processes by utilising technology to mitigate driver risks, while becoming more proactive with the aim of avoiding unsafe practices and reducing safety incidents.

The Sydney control tower will operate between 6am and 8pm Monday to Friday and will then hand operations over to its Penang team in Malaysia, giving Toll 24/7 coverage.

With phase one of the project now complete, Toll Head of Supply Chain Solutions, Shaun O’Flaherty, said the company is planning to begin phase two in the next few months.

“Phase one was focused on the safety and compliance side of the business,” he told Trailer.

“So, it was about setting up and establishing an emergency response service, 24/7 breakdown service, incident management, processes and protocol, and also enabling a proactive approach to fatigue management through the use of technology.

“The second phase is based around migrating key activity from the field and managing the planning, allocation and reporting side of things centrally,” he continued.

“So, that’s where we will identify the key contracts located in like regions with compatible product and equipment types, and then we can manage that activity and the daily demand for those customers centrally, to enable efficiencies and create a network that brings out that economy to scale.”

According to O’Flaherty, the team at Toll is confident that the control tower will further support the business and improve operator safety in the field.

“From a Toll perspective, if we can stop one incident from occurring, then the belief from the team is that we’re absolutely on the right path,” he said.

The new control tower took a year of planning and preparation, and was implemented by a cross functional team including members from the Supply Chain Solutions (SCS) team, IT, the Centre of Excellence (CoE), Equipment, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Operations.
